Product description
Perspective view of Rome - Author: Probst
From the Bavarian typography of the Probsts, in the eighteenth century, various perspective views of European cities came out. Venice, Turin, Paris, London: the painter and draftsman Werner crossed the length and breadth of the old continent during the Age of Enlightenment, collecting the essence of those places in wide-ranging drawings which were then placed in the most elegant salons of the era. Of course, the perspective view of Rome could not be missing from the many canvases produced. And certainly the representation that the Probsts offer us of the Eternal City stands out from the rest of the production, due to the particular subject represented and the sensation that this must have performed on Werner. Rome, in this view, almost seems to overcome the observer, who is overwhelmed by the richness of the buildings, reported in a highly faithful and detailed way. St. Peter's, the Mouth of Truth, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Colosseum: a real eye-catcher returning the painter’s engagement in front of the captivating richness of Roman architecture.
A faithful artistic reproduction of the perspective view of Rome
The fine and elegant drawing, the attention to details, the name of the cities written as if on parchment paper, a rich legend: all these specifics openly declare the paternity of this work, child of the winning combination between Probst and Werner. And without taking away the prestige from this collector’s item, this reproduction is printed on 100% cotton paper, then treated with vegetable substances to age it. The printing was carried out using an old manual press, just like the Probsts did in Augusta, equipped with finely engraved plates by skilled craftsmen in the sector. Of course, the collector is spoiled while choosing among the many perspective views of Rome. Undeniably, this particular edition of the Probst represents one of the highest peaks in this discipline.
