View of London - Author: Probst
The capital of the largest and richest political and commercial empire in the world: that's what London was in the eighteenth century. In this perspective view of the time we can see an already modern metropolis which, while not being able to boast the monumental aspect of other great European capitals such as Vienna and Paris, still manages to impress the traveler. And certainly the English capital deeply impresses the designer Bernhard Werner, who decides to further emphasize the grandeur of its symbolic buildings, which proudly rise in the midst of severe and typically sober London houses. In this exceptionally valuable fresco, the Thames dominates, not to mention St Paul's Cathedral, consecrated in 1697, which gives the whole city a Baroque look. The number of notable buildings reported by the double legend in English and German is impressive: in fact, there are 70 entries in all.
Eighteenth-century London in a perspective view of Probst
The rich cycle of perspective views printed by the Bavarian publishers Probst in the eighteenth century certainly could not miss what, at the time, was the world centre. Like all the other prints of this type released by the renowned Augusta typography, the London one was built on several sheets as well, afterwards mounted in detachments on the back canvas. In this reproduction, even this detail has been respected and repeated, thanks to meticulous printing with a manual press, equipped with skilfully engraved copper plates. As collectors will immediately notice, this particular process gives the print the characteristic 'groove' of the engraving, perfectly perceivable by touching this creative work. Therefore, it is a handcrafted work of great value, capable of enriching any collection, as well as furnish the most elegant interiors. Both the paper and the canvas are made of 100% pure cotton.
